SUNSET PRE-PARTY AT 5:30!

The quintessential document of the interplanetary jazz band leader Sun Ra, Robert Mugge’s Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise captures Ra and his Arkestra after they had relocated to Philadelphia. Portions of the film were shot on the roof of International House as well as at the Penn Museum and other locations and venues in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. The extended live performances capture the group at its peak while interviews with Ra and the band members show their commitment to a unique vision based on discipline and afro-futurist philosophy that is woven into the music. At times noisy and at times joyful, A Joyful Noise is unlike any music film you may have seen.

The feature will be preceded by the short film Out There a Minute With Marshall Allen (Pat Ganley, US, 2019, 7 min.)

Join us at 5:30pm for a Sunset Pre-Party celebrating the Afrofuturist legacy of Sun Ra with DJ Junior and food and beer available for purchase from Brotherly Grub food truck, Pound Cake Heaven, and Dock Street Brewery. Followed by a pre-screening conversation with filmmaker Robert Mugge and DJ/producer/music journalist John Morrison, presented by cinéSPEAK.

PLEASE NOTE: Seating is very LIMITED. You are welcome to bring your own chair or blanket if you do not wish to stand. (Total running time of both films is just over one hour.)
