The Wolf Humanities Center and the Cinema and Media Studies Program at the University of Pennsylvania present this film series titled Working Through Matter: A Film Series on the Politics and Aesthetics of Material Remains.

The Gleaners and I (Les Glaneurs Et La Glaneuse)
Agnès Varda, 2000, 82 min.

What counts as trash and for whom? Varda's handheld camera shifts its attention between abandoned objects and the community of human beings who survive, and often thrive, on trash. Gleaning, Varda reveals, can also be the stuff of artists and filmmakers with their parasitically productive acts of subversion and rejection of authority.

Remarks following the film by Betsy Alexander and Burnell Yow from artist collective, Philadelphia Dumpster Divers, with Vikrant Dadawala, PhD Candidate, English and Cinema Studies, Penn.

Series curated by Rahul Mukherjee (Dick Wolf Assistant Professor of Television and New Media Studies), Vikrant Dadawala (PhD Candidate, English/Cinema Studies), and Nancy Lee Roane (Phd Candidate, Comparative Literature/Cinema Studies).
