Eliran Malka, Israel, 2018, 94 mins, in Hebrew w/English subtitles
Guest speaker: Eliran Malka, Director and Screenwriter
When Yakov Cohen finds out that his daughter was expelled from her high school because of her ethnicity he decides that enough is enough. With a pair of friends, a lot of anger, and little money, Cohen sets out to form a movement to empower all Sephardic Jews and to fight the injustice of prejudice. Set in 1983, this film is an emotional depiction the humble beginnings of the “Shas” political party, along with their rise to power as well as their fall to corruption. Writer/director Eliran Malka brings their absolute vision to the screen with humor and heart with a story that is given life by lead Shuli Rand. Don’t miss this poignant, often comic and often nostalgic, recounting of Shas’ unbelievable story.
